A wonderful reminder to Generations who grew up with social media as their friend. I grew up forced to communicate face to face and voice to voice. I fear for new gens who have been taught that you can get away with an emoji as an answer and that actual friends are the ones on social media. Neither of these are true. I wonder about the states of relationships which, with every generation (since boomer), become more fractured and superficial- a fantasy. We all know we can fantasise a relationship into being. It doesn’t make it real.

Hi Mimi. You left the first comment I have ever received on Substack and I am so thankful for your thoughtful input. I thought it was interesting because my first instinct was to “like” your comment and had I left it at that, it would have exemplified the “superficiality” online interactions can have. In truth, I was so happy someone read and found the article interesting and took the time to respond.

I too wonder about the state of relationships. I believe it is a widespread societal issue and there is a lot of work to do to help young and younger generations to learn how to connect, relate, engage and co-exist with one another.
